One of Ankara’s first football teams, Sultani, was founded by Munif Kemal Ak, the principal of Ankara Sultanisi (now known as Ataturk High School), who had a great passion for football. In the early days of the team, Munif Kemal made some mistakes in player selection and left out several talented students. In response, those students united and founded Genclerbirligi, officially established on March 14, 1923, with red and black as the club’s colors.

Shortly after their founding, Genclerbirligi played against Sultani and won 3-0, boosting the team's morale. In the 1923-24 season, Genclerbirligi competed in their first league campaign, finishing 4th with 3 wins and 3 draws.

Years later, Munif Kemal himself became the president of Genclerbirligi after the dissolution of Sultani. Over the years, Genclerbirligi has seen many ups and downs, reaching Turkey’s top league and sometimes falling to lower divisions. Today, Genclerbirligi remains one of Turkey's most well-known clubs with a loyal fan base. The current club president is Murat Cavcav, the son of the legendary president Ilhan Cavcav.
